Left, right, and why both can be right
Engagement ring: which hand? Left, and the wedding ring on the right after the wedding. That is the custom in Germany, and still there is no obligation. Where the rule comes from, how other countries do it, what happens to the ring at the wedding, and how you decide when tradition and daily life do not match.
The essentials in three sentences: In Germany and Austria the engagement ring usually sits on the left, the wedding ring after the wedding on the right. In Switzerland, in the English-speaking world, in France, Italy and Spain both rings usually stay on the left. None of this is prescribed; the side is habit, not law.
Which hand is customary in Germany?
In Germany the engagement ring is customarily worn on the ring finger of the left hand, the wedding ring after the wedding on the ring finger of the right. Austria does the same. The engagement therefore sits on the left, the marriage on the right, and the change of side marks the day of the ceremony.
Behind that sits an older habit: many couples wear a plain band as an engagement ring, often both partners. At the wedding this band moves from left to right and becomes the wedding ring. The ring with a stone, as most people now expect at a proposal, only became established here later.
None of this is binding. No registry office, no church and no jeweller prescribes the side to you. Anyone who wears the engagement ring on the right is not wearing it wrongly, only differently from the majority.
How do other countries do it?
Which side is customary depends on the country, not on a rule. What feels self-evident in Germany is the exception a few hundred kilometres away. The table shows what is customary in the individual countries.

For binational couples that means: there are two right answers. Some follow the country they live in, others the family that looks more closely. Both are fine, and nobody has to explain it.
What happens to the engagement ring at the wedding?
At the wedding in Germany the wedding ring takes the ring finger of the right hand, and for the engagement ring there are three common paths. None is prescribed, but it is worth making the decision before you buy, because size, width and setting depend on it.
It moves over to the right
At the wedding the engagement ring changes hand and then sits as a guard ring in front of the wedding ring, towards the fingertip. Both rings should match in width and colour, and the engagement ring often needs a different size on the right hand.
It stays on the left
Nothing moves: the engagement ring stays where it was, the wedding ring goes to the right on its own. Two hands, two rings, no question of matching widths. For right-handers this is often the gentlest solution, because the ring stays on the hand that knocks less.
It becomes an occasion ring
Some wear the engagement ring after the wedding only on special occasions or on a chain. The ring stays honoured; daily life belongs to the wedding ring. With an opal that is the kindest thing for the stone.

Why the ring finger of all fingers?
The ring finger is the place for engagement ring and wedding ring because a very old story put it there: the vena amoris, the “vein of love”. Already in ancient Egypt and later among the Romans it was believed that a vein ran from the left ring finger straight to the heart. Anatomically that does not hold; all fingers are supplied with blood in a similar way. The image was still strong enough to last to this day.
That the story speaks of the left ring finger and Germany still wears the wedding ring on the right shows one thing above all: the side was never carved in stone. The finger, on the other hand, stayed. It holds the ring securely, snags less when you grasp things than the index finger or the thumb, and it is the finger everyone immediately associates with a ring.
The finger is no prescription either. Anyone who prefers to wear the engagement ring on the middle finger, on the little finger or on a chain is breaking no rule. Only one thing you should know: the size differs from finger to finger by several numbers, so measure the finger on which the ring is actually meant to sit.
Which hand suits your daily life?
Your working hand, the one you write, grasp and carry with, takes more knocks than the other. A ring there hits door handles, table edges and shopping bags more often. On the other hand it has more peace.
Left-handers therefore often reverse the German habit and wear the engagement ring on the right, on their less-used hand. That is not a break with tradition, it is simply practical. Right-handers have it easier: for them the left is the gentler side anyway; tradition and daily life pull in the same direction.
A point often overlooked here: your two hands are not the same size. The difference is usually about half a ring size; the writing hand is as a rule a little stronger. How do you find your answer?
Five questions are enough for the decision. Go through them once, preferably together.

If the German habit matters to you or your family is watching: engagement on the left, marriage on the right. If not, choose the hand on which the ring feels right. Both are a valid answer.

Right-handers wear the ring most gently on the left hand, left-handers on the right. Anyone who works a lot with their hands should weigh this point higher than any tradition.

Should the engagement ring later sit next to the wedding ring, stay on the left, or become an occasion ring? Anyone who settles that now buys the matching width and saves the reworking.

Measure the ring finger of the hand on which the ring is actually meant to sit; if a switch is planned, both. Half a size decides between pinching and slipping.

Which stone, which setting?
Diamond and sapphire forgive the working hand; an opal needs a bezel setting there. If the ring sits daily on the more-used hand, that decides the setting, not the hand.
What changes with an opal engagement ring?
An opal changes the calculation at one point: the hand helps decide the setting. At a Mohs hardness of 5.5 to 6.5 opal is softer than diamond or sapphire and takes knocks at the edge badly. On the less-used hand it has a quiet life. On the working hand it needs a rim that catches knocks: a bezel setting, in which a metal rim encloses the stone all round and stands slightly proud.
Concretely that means for the hand: if you wear the ring on the left and are right-handed, you can live with a more open setting on an opal too. If the ring is to sit on the right, or move to the right at the wedding, plan the bezel from the start.
