Authenticity and the GSB certificate

Every stone gets its proof. What is written on it, and why we put it in the box.

Gemmological stone quality control, Berlin

With opal, you cannot trust your eyes

Every opal tells its own story, yet many pieces on the market are not what they promise. Some sellers stay vague. Others sell synthetic stones as the original.

A polished opal looks like a polished opal. Whether it is one piece or built from several layers, whether the play of color is real or made, you cannot see it.

That is why our team checks every single opal and issues its own GSB certificate: a Liberty Angels quality document that records authenticity, origin and how the stone is built. With us, you hold a checked original.

Authenticity of the opal

Every stone is checked and documented. No synthetic stone.

Type of opal

We determine exactly which kind of opal it is.

Origin and age

Our stones come from the most important deposits, above all Australia and Ethiopia.

Play of colour

The certificate describes the play of color in your stone, from the shades to the spectrum.

Construction

We record how the stone is built: solid opal, doublet or triplet.

Structure of the opal

Three constructions, all with genuine play of colour

The difference is in the build, the price and the care. The GSB certificate states how your stone is built. We write it down, instead of hiding it.

Solid opal from the side: one continuous piece, no layers

Solid opal

100% natural, one single piece
Made of one piece of natural opal, no layers, no treatment. The play of color comes only from microscopic silica spheres that break light like a prism. The most valuable form, and the only one that can take contact with water.

Doublet from the side: opal layer on a dark base

Doublet

Two layers, bonded
A thin layer of real opal on a dark base of potch or obsidian. The dark base strengthens the play of color, the way a black background makes colors glow.

Triplet from the side: base, opal layer and quartz cap

Triplet

Three layers, with a protective cap
On the doublet construction sits a clear quartz cap. It protects the opal layer and gives the surface its dome. The most accessible way into the world of opal.

The most important identifying feature

The glue line shows the build

Look closely and the golden line appears, the one that joins opal and base. That line separates doublet and triplet from solid opal, and it is one of the most important marks in an authenticity check.

We check it under the microscope and record the result on the certificate. If you want to see it yourself, the layers are shown in detail on our construction page.

Without a microscope

What you can see yourself

Look from the side

A solid opal is one continuous piece. Doublet and triplet show a fine seam at the edge where the layers are bonded. That is exactly where we look under the microscope.

Turn it in the light

The play of colour moves with the viewing angle and changes when the light source moves. A printed or generated pattern stays put.

Think about water

Only solid opal tolerates lasting water contact. Where layers are bonded, water can attack the join. That is why construction is on our product page, not in the fine print.

Microscopic analysis

Every opal under the microscope at 10 to 40 times magnification. That is how we see inclusions, surface structure and details that stay invisible to the naked eye.

Light and UV test

Under changing light and UV, the unmistakable play of color of a natural opal appears, unlike a synthetic one.

Density measurement

When needed, we measure the stone’s density with a hydrostatic method. That separates natural stones clearly from synthetic ones.

Refractometer test

We measure the refractive index, a technical value that tells us about authenticity and the structure of the material.

Verifiable for good

Also filed digitally

Every GSB certificate is tied to your order. In our database you can check, with your name and order number, that your opal was examined and documented by us. Authenticity stays verifiable, even years later.

A later sale or an appraisal is easier, because the certificate can be checked online. Your piece keeps its character and its value, because the proof of authenticity stays available.

If your certificate is ever lost, we issue a new one at any time, free of charge, with no shipping cost.
