The shimmer is right, the stone is not

A milky blue shimmer, but not opal: opalite is glass. At first glance it looks precious, and that is exactly why it sits so often on flea markets, in esoteric shops and on online marketplaces under the label “opal”. How you recognise the material in a minute, what the name has to do with natural milky opal, and how you stay safe when you buy, is below. Without condescension: opalite is pretty. It is just not opal.

In one sentence: Opalite shimmers in a single colour, evenly across the whole piece, and switches between blue and orange depending on the background. A genuine opal shows several colours side by side that jump as you tilt it.

What is opalite?

Opalite is a trade name for man-made opal glass: a glass with a milky blue-white shimmer that recalls opal but is not opal. It has no crystal structure, no formation history over millions of years and no play of colour. It is made in large quantities and cut into beads, cabochons and tumbled stones. In English the same material is called “Opalite”; on marketplaces you also meet it as “Sea Opal”, “opal moonstone” or, wrongly, as “Tiffany Stone”, a name that actually belongs to a violet-white rock from Utah.

Picture a flea market on a Sunday morning. On a velvet cloth lies a pendant that glows blue in the light like moonlight on water. “Opal, from my aunt's estate,” says the seller, and the price is tempting. Very likely you are holding opalite. That is not an accusation; many do not know themselves. As glass the material is perfectly fine, and the shimmer really is beautiful.

Where the shimmer comes from, physics explains: tiny particles in the glass scatter short-wave blue light more strongly than red. Specialists call that the Tyndall effect, the same reason the sky is blue and the sunset orange. Against a dark background opalite therefore looks bluish; held against the light, orange to peach. A genuine opal builds its glow quite differently: from ordered silica spheres that diffract light and split it into spectral colours.

Opalite or opal: where is the difference?

The difference is in the material and in the light: opalite is poured glass with a single-colour shimmer; opal is a naturally grown silica gel with a multi-colour play of colour. Tilt both under a lamp. On opalite a blue veil draws across the surface without ever showing a second colour. On opal, green, blue, orange or red flash in clearly bounded patches that travel as you turn it.

How do you recognise opalite?

Six features give opalite away: evenness, air bubbles under the loupe, the missing play of colour, the colour change with background, the price, and weight and coolness in the hand. No single feature is proof, but three of them together leave little doubt.

The loupe view decides

A ten-times loupe costs little and shows you the most reliable feature. Air bubbles form during pouring, are spherical or slightly elongated and often sit in groups; with them come swirls like stirring honey into tea. A natural opal under the same loupe shows colour patches, fine veins or inclusions, but no spheres.

The background test takes ten seconds. Lay the piece on a black cloth: opalite glows bluish. Then hold it against a light wall or into backlight: now it turns orange to honey-coloured. A genuine opal looks stronger against a dark ground, but does not flip from blue to orange.

On price a simple comparison helps. Opalite beads cost a few cents to about one euro each, cabochons usually under five euros, finished pendants in fashion-jewellery settings five to thirty euros (as of 2026). A genuine opal with play of colour in that size already sits well above that as a loose stone. If an “opal pendant” costs as much as a pizza, the price already says what is inside.

Weight and coolness are the weakest feature, but they are noticeable: glass at around 2.5 grams per cubic centimetre is a little denser than opal, so opalite feels rather heavy for its size and often cooler at first touch. Take that as a complement to the loupe view, never as proof.

How do you check a piece in five steps?

Five steps are enough: change the background, tilt it under a lamp, use a loupe, read the listing, and when in doubt have it checked. Whether an heirloom from the drawer, a ring from a holiday market or a pendant from yesterday's parcel: the path is the same and takes less than five minutes.

  1. Change the background

    Lay the piece on dark cloth, then on white paper, then hold it against the light. If the tone flips from blue to orange, you almost certainly have opal glass.

  2. Tilt it under a lamp

    Turn the piece slowly under a point light source and look for at least two colours that flash at clearly bounded spots. A single-colour veil is not play of colour.

  3. Use a loupe

    At ten times magnification you look for round bubbles and swirls. If you find them, the matter is decided: glass. Colour patches, veins or sand inclusions speak for natural opal.

  4. Read the listing and the price

    Does it say “Opalith”, “Opalite”, “Sea Opal”, “opal glass” or “synthetic” anywhere? Then the question is answered. If every material statement is missing at fashion-jewellery prices, that too is an answer, only unspoken.

  5. When in doubt, have it checked

What does “opalite jewellery” mean on marketplaces?

“Opalite jewellery” means fashion jewellery with opal glass, usually in silver-plated or base-metal settings and made in large runs. Honestly labelled, there is nothing wrong with that. The problem starts with the tag: the same material appears as “opal”, “opal moonstone”, “Sea Opal” or “opal gemstone”, and the word “synthetic” is missing from the headline, if it stands anywhere at all.

How you spot an opalite listing before you order

The picture: a flawlessly milky-blue stone, often large, often identical several times in the same advert. Natural opal would not come that even at that price, and certainly not ten times over.

The wording: “opal moonstone”, “Sea Opal”, “rainbow moonstone”, plus promises about an “effect”. Reputable opal sellers name the locality; with glass you get, at best, the country of manufacture.

And the price: pendants under twenty euros, chains “with opal” under thirty euros, bead strands for a few euros (as of 2026). Those prices do not cover natural opal with play of colour.

Your protection: Before you buy, ask in writing what the material is, insist on the statement “natural opal”, “synthetic opal” or “glass”, and keep the answer. Online purchases from commercial sellers you can cancel within 14 days; if glass was expressly sold to you as opal, you have warranty rights on top of that.

What effect does opalite have?

Esoteric shops ascribe to opalite a calming, balancing effect, often linked to transitions and new beginnings. None of that is proven, and with opalite there is an extra peculiarity: the material is factory glass, without the mineral history that healing-stone traditions otherwise invoke. Anyone looking for the effect of a stone should at least know that no stone is involved here.

Opal itself has been credited since antiquity with properties, from hope to protection on journeys. Those are interpretations, not measurable effects; where they come from is in Opal meaning and folklore. More important than any effect when you buy is that you get what the label says.

Is opalite always glass? Milky opal and synthetic opal

No, in the German stone trade the word has a second meaning: “Opalith” is occasionally also used for natural common opals without play of colour, above all milky-white pieces otherwise called milky opal. Common opal is genuine opal material, only without the ordered sphere structure that produces play of colour: a natural stone with a locality and an age, but without what makes opal valuable. If someone offers you “Opalith” as a natural stone, ask whether glass or common opal is meant. The price should be low in both cases.

Synthetic opal is something else again. In the laboratory genuine opal material is formed: silica spheres are built over months into an ordered structure, and the result shows a full play of colour. How do you buy genuine opal safely?

You buy safely where the material is named in writing and someone stands behind that statement. Three things make the difference: a clear material statement (natural opal, solid opal, doublet, triplet, synthetic or glass), a certificate linked to the specific piece, and a guarantee beyond the legal minimum. If one of those is missing, ask. If all three are missing, the price is the only honest thing about the offer.
