Crystal opal is a transparent to translucent precious opal whose play of color seems to glow from deep inside the stone. That depth makes it one of the most striking opals of all.

Its name is a little misleading, though — it has nothing to do with crystals. What crystal opal really is, why it isn't a separate opal type, where it comes from, what it costs, and how to care for it — short and clear.

What is a crystal opal?

A crystal opal is a transparent to translucent precious opal with a clear body, through which the play of color glows from deep within. The name refers to its transparency, not to a crystal in the mineralogical sense.

Is crystal opal a separate opal type?

No — and that's the key point to understand. “Crystal” only describes the transparency of the body, not a separate mineral or a distinct deposit. Almost any opal field can produce crystal opal, from light to dark, depending on the surrounding ground.

How does a crystal opal form?

Crystal opal forms like any other opal: silica-rich water seeps into cavities in the rock over millions of years, slowly evaporates, and leaves behind tiny spheres of silicon dioxide. Purity is what matters — when almost no foreign matter gets trapped inside, the body stays clear instead of milky, and that's exactly what makes a crystal opal.

Where does crystal opal come from?

The classic sources lie in Australia: Coober Pedy yields light crystal opals, while Lightning Ridge also produces dark “Black Crystal” varieties with especially deep fire. Crystal-clear opal also comes from Ethiopia's Welo region — though that material is hydrophane and reacts to water.

What makes its play of color so special?

Because the body is transparent, light travels deep into the stone and is only refracted far below the surface. The play of color appears to float inside the opal — three-dimensional, with real depth. That's exactly what sets crystal opal apart from milky white opal, where the colors sit closer to the surface.

How do you care for your crystal opal?

Australian crystal opal is low-maintenance but sensitive to knocks and heat. Clean it with a soft, slightly damp cloth — no chemicals, no ultrasonic cleaners — and store it separately so harder stones can't scratch it. If yours is Ethiopian hydrophane crystal opal, also keep it away from water.
