Which opal suits you, cannot be answered in general terms, but it can be narrowed down. Metal, piece of jewellery, shape and colour world: answer these four questions and you end up in front of a handful of pieces instead of the whole range. The selection is a recommendation, not an order. Every opal is unique, so the colour within a colour world is slightly different on every piece.
What the four questions answer: Gold emphasises warm colours, silver the cool ones. Round and oval stones are the safest shapes, pear and marquise the more striking ones. And the colour world decides more about the effect than the size of the stone does.
Gold or silver?
This decision has more effect than most people expect, because the metal amplifies or dampens the colours in the stone.
Picks up red, orange and golden shares and makes the stone look warmer. Yellow gold does this most clearly, rose gold softens it. The obvious choice for an opal with fire.
Makes blue and green shares appear clearer and cooler. A pale crystal opal looks calmer and more modern in silver. Also the more affordable way in.
Which piece of jewellery?
Ring
Closest to daily life and therefore under the most strain. With an opal a bezel setting is worth it here, protecting the stone all round. Careful with gifts: ring size is the most common source of error.
Necklace
The safest way in. A pendant rarely knocks against anything, is clearly visible and fits without measuring. For a gift the most straightforward choice.
Earrings
Colour close to the face, visible in the mirror every morning. The art lies in finding two matching opals, because every stone is different.
Bracelet
Moves constantly and catches the light anew all the time. Anyone who likes neither rings nor necklaces will find their way in here.
Which shape?
The shape determines how calm or striking a piece looks, and it has a say in how much of the play of colour is visible at all.

Which colour world?
The point most people think about longest. Three routes are open.
White and crystal
Pale base tone, the play of colour lying on it like a shimmer. Unobtrusive, suited to daily wear, the largest part of our range.
Blue and green
The most common play colours and therefore the best value. Looks fresh and cool, especially in silver.
Red and fire
The rarest and most expensive direction. An opal with real red is a statement and strongest in gold.

And how often will you wear it?
The question the configurator does not ask, but the one that decides how happy you will be. Opal is softer than sapphire or diamond.

Then go by daily life rather than by taste. Every day and never off: surrounding setting, Australian stone, ring as well as necklace. A necklace is an option, not the condition for everyday wear. On metal the rule is: what you already wear today will suit you tomorrow. Anyone used to silver rarely switches to gold for good, and the same the other way round.
Common questions about choosing
Which opal is best for beginners?
A pale opal with a blue or green play of colour in silver. These colours are the most common and therefore the most affordable, and the pale body tone is less sensitive than a dark top stone.
Does opal suit gold or silver better?
Red and golden shares look warmer in yellow and rose gold, blue and green clearer in silver and white gold. What matters most is which metal is otherwise worn.
Which shape is the safest choice?
Round and oval. Both look calm, suit almost any occasion and are the most widely represented in the range.
Which opal takes the most in daily wear?
The boulder opal, because the hard mother rock on the back supports the opal layer. Add a bezel setting, in which a rim of metal encloses the stone.
Why does the same opal look different in every photo?
Because the colours are not inside the stone but arise through refraction of light. Angle of view and light source change the result; that is not image editing but the nature of the stone.
Can I combine two opals?
Yes, ideally within one colour world and the same metal. Just make sure the pieces do not touch in storage.
